Talisker Distillery is one of the most popular destinations on Skye. Nestled at the foot of the Cuillins, there are plenty of opportunities for an adventure-filled day.
Morning
The Fairy Pools are beautiful rock pools of translucent mountain spring water fed by a series of waterfalls from the Cuillin Mountains. Visitors can embark on the stunning 2.4km walk from the car park to the Fairy Pools via the gravel path bordered with grass, heather, peat and rocks up towards the largest waterfall, or walk further up the path and explore some of the smaller pools which lie beyond.
The water of the Fairy Pools is crystal-clear, perfect for any adventurous swimmers brave enough to enter the icy waters. It is advisable to bring a wetsuit for this activity as these beautiful rock pools can be bracing!
If you want a few less people and a more strenuous workout, consider bagging a munro in the Cuillins. The route to Bruach na Frithe is a challenging 13.75km hillwalk, and easy to get lost in the mist, but rewards the walker with fine viewpoints. As this is a 5-7 hour walk, an early start is recommended.
Afternoon
The oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye, at Talisker you will experience the beautiful landscape and the intense and powerful flavours of Talisker, a whisky as wild, raw and yet refined as the island itself.
A visit to Talisker embodies the adventurous spirit you’ll feel when you’re visiting Skye. A truly unique whisky experience in a stunning setting, Talisker offers the visitor a variety of sensory indulgences, such as their signature distillery tour, an immersive tasting experience, and an unforgettable experience drawing Talisker straight from the cask. An impressive range of retail items are available, including the opportunity to bottle your own whisky on site. A bar for tasting flights and cocktails rounds out the day’s adventure.
Accommodation and Dining:
In Carbost, The Old Inn offers food and several options for accommodation. The nearby campsite at Glenbrittle is award-winning and has a cafe. Further back along the road, the establishment at Sligachan offers a hotel, campgrounds, a restaurant and impressive whisky bar.
Transportation:
Talisker is easy to reach from the mainland via the Skye Bridge. For something different, consider taking the Glenelg Ferry, the original Skye ferry and the last surviving manually operated turntable ferry in the world.
Helpful tips:
Talisker tours sell out early, so this is one you want to book far in advance. Accommodation on Skye goes quickly too, so be sure to book your accommodation early.
