Planning your travel and accommodation around a multi-island festival can be a challenge, but with a little foresight, you can unlock an unforgettable Hebridean whisky adventure. This guide offers a practical driving itinerary designed to help you attend all the distilleries during the Hebridean Whisky Festival 2025. While alternative routes, partial attendance, and modes of transport like flying, cycling, or sailing are always options, this guide focuses on making the most of the islands with your own car.
The Journey Begins: Skye & Raasay
Thursday, September 4th: Talisker Distillery, Isle of Skye
The festival kicks off at Talisker Distillery, located on the shores of Loch Harport on the picturesque Isle of Skye. Accessing Skye is straightforward: take a CalMac ferry from Mallaig, experience the unique Glenelg-Skye Ferry, or cross the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. From the bridge, Talisker is just under an hour’s drive.
Accommodation Tip: Skye offers a variety of accommodation options, but they book up quickly. Consider securing your stay through Saturday evening, as the next two days of festivities are nearby. For campers, Glenbrittle Campsite and the Sligachan Hotel (a bit further afield) are good choices.
Friday, September 5th: Torabhaig Distillery, Isle of Skye

Today’s festivities bring you to Torabhaig Distillery, an hour’s drive back towards the mainland, located on the stunning Sleat Peninsula. You may recall the 2024 Festival Finale was held here.
Saturday, September 6th: Isle of Raasay Distillery
The festival moves to the Isle of Raasay. Situated halfway between Talisker and Torabhaig, the ferry to Raasay departs from Sconser. Expect a considerable amount of traffic to Raasay today, as the Isle of Raasay Distillery is also hosting the Raasay Piping Competition – a truly epic event not to be missed! While you can take your car on the ferry, the distillery is a mere five-minute walk from the ferry terminal and easily accessible on foot. Parking your car at the ferry port (following designated parking instructions) may allow you more time to explore the island.

The Grand Island Hop: Tiree
Sunday, September 7th: Travel Day to Oban
While the whisky experiences so far will have been exceptional, this leg of the journey marks the beginning of the island-hopping adventure. We’ve allocated two days to travel from Raasay/Skye to Tiree, as it requires a strategic approach. If you’re driving, we recommend a leisurely Sunday drive from Skye/Raasay to Oban, a scenic journey of approximately four hours.
- Options for Travelling to Tiree:
- By Car: You must depart from Oban.
- Foot Passenger: Catch a bus from Glasgow to connect with the Oban ferry.
- By Air: Flights are available from Glasgow, Oban, or Coll.
Monday, September 8th: Arrival on Tiree & Exploration
The only ferry to Tiree on Monday departs Oban at 7:15 AM, requiring check-in no later than 6:30 AM. After a brief stop at Coll, you’ll arrive on Tiree at 11:05 AM. The rest of the day is yours to either get a head start visiting the distillery or explore this tiny island.
Tuesday, September 9th: Tiree Distillery Open Day
Today is a full open day at Tiree Distillery, culminating in a special 5-course whisky-themed meal at Alan Stevenson House, followed by an evening of chat and tunes with Ian and Alain, the founders of Tiree Distillery. More information is to come, but expect a day packed full of entertainment and sensory experiences.
Foot Passenger Transportation on Tiree: Taxi service on Tiree is limited. We are actively exploring alternative transportation options for the festival (including transfers between the ferry port, lodging, and all festival events). If you plan to travel on foot and require assistance with transportation, please contact Cindy at [email protected]. No commitment is needed, we are simply gathering indicative numbers to plan accordingly.
Wednesday, September 10th: Tiree to Barra, Then on to Eriskay
Today, you’ll take the CalMac ferry from Oban to Castlebay, Barra, which conveniently makes a stop on Tiree on its way to the Outer Hebrides (note: this stop is not daily, so confirm when booking). Even experienced ferry travelers can find this specific booking challenging, so we highly recommend calling CalMac directly for assistance, 0800 066 5000 (or +44 1475 650 397 for International customers).
The ferry is due to arrive in Castlebay at 2:00 PM. The next ferry is from Ardmhor to Eriskay. The drive across Barra from port to port takes approximately 20 minutes. There are several ferries operating between Barra and Eriskay throughout Wednesday and into the next day. Getting to this point was likely the most challenging in terms of transportation, but it eases up from here!

The Outer Hebrides: Benbecula, North Uist & Harris
Thursday, September 11th: Benbecula Distillery
The festivities resume at Benbecula Distillery. To reach it, you’ll drive across the causeways connecting Eriskay, South Uist, and Benbecula. Today and tomorrow promise new and exciting whisky experiences, as both Benbecula and North Uist distilleries commenced spirit production in 2024. The visitor centre at Benbecula recently opened in Spring 2025, and there’s much to see and experience!
Friday, September 12th: North Uist Distillery
Today offers a welcome break from extensive travel, as North Uist Distillery is a mere 10-minute drive from Benbecula Distillery. Pop over to North Uist Distillery to experience their new make spirit and enjoy a day of tastings and special events.
Saturday, September 13th: FESTIVAL FINALE at Isle of Harris Distillery
The Festival Finale awaits at the Isle of Harris Distillery! Your next ferry will be from Berneray to Leverburgh (drive across North Uist to the port at Berneray). The festivities at the Isle of Harris won’t begin until noon, allowing travellers from North Uist and Skye ample time to arrive. For those coming from Skye, the ferry conveniently deposits you right at the distillery’s doorstep, while travellers from North Uist will require a half-hour or more drive.
The Festival Finale brings all the distillery members together under one roof on Harris, and it’s also a significant milestone for the Isle of Harris Distillery, celebrating its 10th anniversary in September 2025. Celebrations are expected to continue late into the evening. Join us for this gala day!
Accommodation and Transportation on Harris: Both accommodation and transportation on Harris are limited. You may need to book your accommodation further afield; hotels in Stornoway, approximately an hour’s drive north, are an option. If you are traveling on foot and require taxi service, we strongly urge you to make arrangements now. Uber is not available on Harris, and taxis are scarce. Please arrange your transportation in advance, and contact your accommodation provider for assistance if you encounter difficulties. The local community is friendly and will do their best to help, please help them by making arrangements now.
Departure Options from Harris
If you’re departing Harris for the mainland the following day, you have two primary ferry options:
- Tarbert – Uig (Skye) ferry: Convenient if you’re heading back to Skye.
- Stornoway – Ullapool ferry: More convenient if you’re spending the evening in Stornoway.

Pro Tip: If you’ve missed your ferry or are a bit too late to book online, you can try your luck with the standby lane. If any cars don’t show up for their booked spot, CalMac will sometimes allow others to take their place. It’s risky, but the friendly CalMac crew often do their best to accommodate passengers.
We look forward to seeing you at the festival!
